Updating Zoom

If you already have Zoom installed prior to this conference, you should check that you are running the latest version of Zoom (6.1.11) by following the instructions in this short video.

Zoom Settings

Please note that options may be labelled slightly differently depending on what operating system you are using.

Before your talk, please download the Zoom App and update the following settings:

  • General:
    • Check ‘Use Dual Monitors’ if you have a multiscreen setup as this will provide you with a more flexible Zoom experience. You may prefer to keep it in single monitor mode for fewer windows.
    • Check 'Show meetings timer' (may also be called ‘show my connected time’ or 'Show my meeting duration') if you want a timer for your session.
  • Video:
    • Camera:
      • If you have multiple cameras, ensure to select the desired one from the drop down menu
      • Check ‘HD’ & ‘Original Ratio’
      • Check ‘Mirror My Video’ if you find it difficult seeing yourself in a mirrored view (makes it easier if pointing to things)
    • My Video:
      • Uncheck ‘Touch up my appearance’
      • Check ‘Adjust for low light’ if in poor lighting conditions (this should only be used if absolutely necessary)
  • Video (Advanced) (click the button)
    • Uncheck ‘Optimize quality of the video I send with de-noise’
    • Use hardware acceleration for:
      • Check Video processing
      • Check Virtual Background
      • Check Receiving Video
      • Check Sending Video
    • Video Rendering Method: Auto
    • Video Rendering Post Processing: Auto
    • Video Capturing Method: Auto
  • Backgrounds & effects
    • Check ‘Mirror My Video’ if you find it difficult seeing yourself in a mirrored view (makes it easier if pointing to things)
    • Uncheck ‘Touch up my appearance’
    • Check ‘Adjust for low light’ if in poor lighting conditions (this should only be used if absolutely necessary)
    • We do not recommend using a virtual background if you do not have prior experience and a known working setup. A poorly executed virtual background or greenscreen replacement can lead to very undesirable results
  • Audio
    • Speaker
      • Select your desired audio output device from the dropdown menu. Note: Please use headphones if you plan on playing any audio into the Zoom session as this will prevent the audio from your speakers being picked up by your microphone.
      • Press ‘Test Speaker’ and set the Volume slider based on the output level
    • Microphone
      • Ensure your desired microphone or audio input is selected from the dropdown menu, (note: this can also be changed on-the-fly through the up arrow next to the Mute/Unmute button in the main Zoom control bar)
      • Uncheck ‘Automatically Adjust Microphone volume’
      • Click ‘Test Mic’ and set the volume slider to the desired input level
      • Then for the audio profile...
        • If you are using professional equipment and are in a space that is dedicated to recording audio OR you need to present live and need to play external audio such as a musical instrument into your Zoom session then choose Original Sound for Musicians. Then underneath that:
          • Uncheck echo cancellation (unless you are not wearing headphones or playing a musical instrument)
          • Check High Fidelity Music Mode - This increases the bitrate of your audio from 48khz to 96khz. (Note this option is only available on the 64-bit version of the Zoom app.)
          • Stereo Audio
            • If this option isn’t available, then please check that:
              • You have created a Zoom Account here (if you don’t already have one)
              • That in your settings, you have checked the following:
                • Allow users to select stereo audio in their client settings
                • Allow users to select original sound in their client settings
              • That you are logged in to your Zoom client as the Zoom account.
        • Otherwise choose Zoom background noise removal and set to Auto
      • Additional Settings (leave as they are)
  • Share Screen
    • Window size when screen sharing: set this to your desired preference
    • Check ‘Scale to fit shared content in Zoom window’
    • If the option is available, Uncheck ‘Show my Zoom Windows to other participants while sharing’
    • Uncheck ‘Side by Side’ mode
    • Check ‘Silence System notifications when sharing desktop’
  • Share Screen (Advanced)
    • Check that screen capture mode is set to Auto.
      • If your track host sees gray boxes on your feed, then try changing the screen capture mode to Advanced share with window filtering, and then check if the boxes are still visible.
    • (Windows Only) Use hardware acceleration for:
      • Check Screen Sharing
      • Check ‘Annotations on a shared screen or whiteboard’
