Victor Lazzarini

About Me

Victor Lazzarini is a Professor of Music at Maynooth University and the Director of the Arts and Humanities Institute. A BMus graduate of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil, he received his AMusD from the University of Nottingham, UK. His academic interests include musical signal processing and sound synthesis; computer music languages; electroacoustic and instrumental composition, and improvisation. He has authored over one hundred fifty peer-reviewed publications in his various specialist research areas. He is the author of Aulib and Aurora, two object-oriented libraries for audio signal processing, and is one of the project leaders for the Csound sound and music programming system.
Prof. Lazzarini has forged links with Industry, providing consultancy and research support to Irish companies in the area of computer music and running an Enterprise-Ireland funded commercialisation project. In addition to these activities, he is active as a composer of computer and instrumental music, having won the AIC/IMRO International Composition prize in 2006. His music is regularly performed in Ireland and abroad, and has been released by the Irish label FarPoint Recordings. Recent papers include 'A Digital Model for the Prologue Voltage Control Filter' (Journal of the Audio Engineering Society 2024) and 'Theory and Practice of Higher Order Frequency Modulation Synthesis' (Journal of New Music Research 2024). He has also completed the volume Ubiquitous Music Ecologies (with D. Keller, N. Otero, and L. Turchet, Routledge 2020), as well a research monograph for Oxford University Press, Spectral Music Design: A Computational Approach (2021), and more recently, Csound, A Sound and Music Computing System, Volume II (2026).
Victor Lazzarini's music can be heard on Spotify and other streaming platforms.

[pie_register_form id="1" title="true" description="true" ]In this talk, we will present our system for modular spectral audio processing on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) platform using a high-level programming approach. FPGAs are integrated circuits or chips with a large number of reconfigurable logic units or programmable logic, enabling custom hardware programming. They provide high throughput, ultra-low latency and vast parallelisation possibilities, making them well-suited to audio processing applications, especially spectral processing, which is generally challenging to implement in computationally limited embedded environments. Through our system, we will showcase how these advantages can be leveraged to implement real-time spectral processing as a […]
