About Me

Ryan is an independent software developer living in Southern Oregon. He has been working on audio-related apps and plug-ins since 2017, and in that time, his products have received over 200,000 downloads. Before going into software full time, Ryan spent five years teaching high school math where he taught pre-algebra through precalculus. His background as a math educator has influenced his approach to development, and Ryan loves that audio software lets you use a lot of fun math under the hood to help enable creative expression for others.

Building a Library of Custom Math Approximations
    00:00 - 00:00 UTC | Monday 9th November 2026 |
    Intermediate

Standard library math functions are designed for maximum precision and robustness. In digital signal processing, however, we may want to make strategic tradeoffs to get better performance. This talk will explore how Python and Claude assistance were used to develop a library of high-performance math approximations. The talk will give an overview of the necessary math concepts, including Chebyshev polynomials, and show how they can be used to implement several important math functions for audio processing. We'll also cover special considerations related to floating-point behavior and SIMD vectorization, along with concrete strategies for improving an implementation's worst-case error. The presentation […]
