Creating and maintaining great audio software is hard - but many of the challenges aren’t unique to audio.

Increasing complexity, shifting requirements, and unresolved design decisions are patterns that appear across games, web applications, and automation systems too. Other fields have developed practical approaches to managing them, and audio has a lot to gain from paying attention.

Drawing on experience across development, design, and production - as a developer, technical artist, and project manager - this talk examines how proven approaches from game development, software engineering, design, and automation can be applied to audio product design, development, and tooling.

The focus is on how products are conceived and built: how decisions get made, how systems are structured, and how automation can save time and protect quality. We’ll look at practical patterns that improve clarity and scalability - and how AI is accelerating both creation and the accumulation of complexity. Perhaps surprisingly, many of the same techniques that help teams stay in control also translate well to agentic workflows.

A recurring theme is the trade-off between speed and control, and how different industries manage that balance.

You’ll leave with concrete approaches for applying cross-industry thinking to your own design, workflows, and tooling.
