Lessons from Building a 3D DAW in Unity
Frustrated by the limits of immersive production tools, I set out to build a full 3D DAW using Unity, with a rather naive and total lack of development experience. 5 years of countless late nights later, and this “Ableton in a game engine” experiment is now fully functional, with real-time acoustic simulation, physical interaction, and completely free movement of sounds and listeners in a 3D space. Here, I share technical and spiritual lessons I learned (the hard way) in designing, developing, and monetizing audio software as a solo, untrained developer.
